But whether you’re a returning veteran or total newbie, the question remains: Which class should you be rolling to make sure you have the best possible time in Destiny 2?
Destiny 2 might not be quite as baffling to newcomers as the first one was, but it can still be overwhelming. To help you get over that first hurdle we’ve put together some tips on how to pick a class and get into the action.
We’ve cherry-picked key info from our Destiny 2 class and subclass guide so that new and returning players alike can quickly get across what’s available in the Destiny 2 class-wise.
You have three classes to choose from, each with two returning and one new subclass, so there are plenty of options to explore. Have a browse and let us know which class you’re using or succeeding with in Destiny 2, whether you’re a newbie or a veteran of Bungie’s shoot-n-loot times.
Destiny 2 class basics
Destiny 2 offers players a choice of three classes, each of which has access to multiple subclasses. The three classes are Titan, Warlock and Hunter.
Aside from available subclasses, which we’ll get to in a moment, the primary differentiators between the three Destiny 2 classes are their armour level (squishiness), melee animation, class item, mobility ability (jump), class ability and favoured attribute.
Titan
Titans are the hardiest but also the slowest class. They are capable of dishing out mega damage, and their Exotics tend to focus on ramping up their powerful Supers or particular weapons, notably assault rifles. A good all-round class, especially for beginners, capable of being a real help in with clever use of cover, or by soaking up enemy attention while the squishies hide in PvE.

- The Titan class ability allows them to summon a Barrier, opening tactical opportunities and resupplying ammo.
Warlock
Warlocks are exceptionally powerful if you study the skill trees and master the loops available through particular build combinations. However, they also recover from damage faster than any other class, and in the current meta (October 2017) that is proving a huge advantage in PvP especially. Their support abilities make them very welcome allies in both PvE and PvP, but you need to be smart about cover given your lower basic survivability.

- Warlocks are the most lightly armoured class.
- The Warlock melee is a flat-palmed forward strike (often called a slap).
- Warlocks wear a circlet called a Bond on their upper arm.
- The Warlock mobility ability is Glide, which has a long, slow air time.
- Warlocks have naturally high Recovery, meaning they regenerate health faster after taking damage.
- The Warlock class ability allows them to heal or buff themselves and nearby allies for a short period of time via an AoE Rift.
- Hunter
The quickest class, Hunters are arguably the most powerful PvP contenders – but only in the hands of real Crucible hounds who master the dodge, know how to put Mobility to use and leverage specific Exotics to their advantage. Although it isn’t immediately obvious, they have an important role in co-op PvE, generating Orbs of Light via Orpheus Rig (Nightstalker) or Golden Gun (Gunslinger) to power Super chains for mega team DPS, providing support buffs, and going invisible to sneak off and wait for revive timers when the rest of the team goes down. This is an undervalued skill!
- Hunters wear medium armour.
- The default Hunter melee is a stab, but they also have a punch option.
- Hunters wear a Cloak as their class item.
- The Hunter mobility ability is a true double jump.
- Hunters have naturally high Mobility, which means they strafe faster while aiming, jump further and have the fastest non-sprint run speed.
- The Hunter class ability is a Dodge that reloads weapons or refills melee energy.
Destiny 2 subclasses
Players are locked into their initial class choice in Destiny 2, but can switch freely between unlocked subclasses, with experience earned used to purchase upgrade nodes on each subclass tree.
Each subclass is aligned to one of three elements – Arc, Solar and Void – and are further differentiated from each other by super abilities and grenade types, unique passive buffs and attribute bonuses, and enhancements to basic melee and mobility abilities. Combined with class-specific Exotics, they are the key to putting together neat, synergistic builds.
Nine subclasses are available in Destiny 2 – three for each of the in-game classes. These include the three new subclasses added with Destiny 2. Your choices are:
- Titan
- Striker (Arc)
- Sentinel (Void)
- Sunbreaker (Solar)
- Hunter
- Arcstrider (Arc)
- Gunslinger (Solar)
- Nightstalker (Void)
- Warlock
- Dawnblade (Solar)
- Voidwalker (Void)
- Stormcaller (Arc)

So, which class should I roll in Destiny 2?
It might be worth trying out a few different classes first before getting too invested to ensure you like your point. Testing out jumping and melee is particularly important – some players absolutely hate a particular’s class’s mobility ability – and you may find you fall in love with one melee over another, too.
If you’re pressed for time, here are some considerations. First and foremost, how do you like to play shooters? Do you like to charge in with shotguns, or hang back and snipe? Titans are fantastic in the front row, whereas Warlocks and Hunters have bonuses that encourage them to keep their distance.
Monks tread the path of discipline, and those with the will to endure that path discover within themselves not what they are, but what they are meant to be.Wait. Does monk do more dmg with knuckles or unarmed ff3 build. Stop we are talking about realism/realistic explanations in/for a game.
How about mobility? Destiny in general is a game that encourages mobile play, but not everybody likes hopping around changing direction in mid air. If you do enjoy high agility play, the Hunter may be for you.
If what you really like doing is unleashing hell with special abilities, the Warlock is a good fit. While all the classes can be devastating in the right situation, Warlocks in particular compensate for their squishiness with an immense capacity for murder. If you like glass builds and min-maxing you can have an excellent time.
Beyond that, do you tend to group up, or are you a natural solo? The Warlock’s healing and buff abilities will make them a favourite friend in group situations. The Titan may suit those willing to work in teams to sort out the best tactical locations for cover. The Hunter, on the other hand, is kind of in it for number one (although, that said, a skilled Hunter uses their agility to provide support and revives).
All of the classes are useful and a good time in PvE, but if you’re interested in PvP (Crucible), things are a bit trickier. As of October 2017, Warlocks are arguably the strongest class, since they can build their Recovery to max (10) with good armour choices.
All classes are capable of building to at least 6 Recovery, though, and your playstyle may favour a more demanding arrangement; the deadliness of highly skilled Hunters is not something all of us will achieve, but those who do are dominant in every match. (Everyone loves a Titan who knows where to place cover, though, so don’t worry about it too much!)
Changing Element Dmg Destiny 2 0
Finally, and while it may seem frivolous, take a look at each class’s general appearance. Destiny 2 is a game about gear, and how you look is one way of showing off how impressive your collection is (Titan players tend to care less about it, but Warlocks and Hunters are all about style). Which class do you most like the look of? Capes, coats, or carapace…?

Armor 2.0 is the umbrella name for the many changes to Destiny 2's Armor system in late 2019.
Armor can now be customised to better suit your style, both through base stats and giving it perks you can acquire through Armor mods.
Not only that, you can now change an Armor's appearance through a Universal Ornament 'transmog' system - allowing you to make better use of those hard earned cosmetics.
All these features are introduced as part of Destiny 2's third year, with the arrival of New Light content and Shadowkeep.

Remember all the following features are only supported with Armor picked up from Year 3 onwards. That means if you want Mods to equip inside a legacy raid set, you need to run that and acquire them again.
What is Destiny 2's Armor 2.0 system and how does it work?
Destiny 2's Armor 2.0 system sees how you use armor change significantly as the game enters its third year, allowing you to customise it with stats and appearance to suit your playstyle.
Here's how it all works:
- Armor affects six stats, which changes based on the base value of the pieces you equip and the mods you slot into them.
- These are a mix of values from both the original Destiny and its sequel, and have a value of 1 to 100. Every 10 points then gives you a stat boost - for example, a mobility value of 30 increases your Guardian's movement by 13%, where as a value of 40 has 16%.
- These values are as follows:
- Mobility - 'Increases your movement speed and maximum jump height'
- Resilience - 'Increases the amount of damage you can take before dying'
- Recovery - 'Increases the speed at which you regain lost health'
- Discipline - 'Increases the cooldown time of your grenades, allowing you to use them more often'
- Intellect - 'Decreases the cooldown of your Super ability, allowing you to use it more often'
- Strength - 'Decreases the cooldown time of your melee ability, allowing you to use it more often'
- Equipping armor will increase these values in different ways. They can also use Mods, which introduce perks.
- Each mod has a value, and the more you level up armor, the more perks you can equip. For example, if your armor is level six, then you have a budget of six points to spend - so you could equip mods worth 2 and 4 points each.
- You can level up each armor piece up to level 10, which requires certain materials such as Enchantment Prisms or Ascendant Shards. Not only does this give you a budget of 10 when equipping mods, but it'll be 'Masterworked', giving it a +2 stat boost.
- You cannot slot any Mod into any armor piece. Some are specific to that slot - Chest pieces will focus on Unflinching and Capacity Mods, for example - while others will need to match the Armor's Void, Solar or Arc status.
- Though class items won't have stats, they can be equipped with mods to add new perks.
- Mods are not consumables - once you own one, then can socketed as many times as you like across different respective armor pieces that support them.
- Exotics work differently - while other armour sets don't come with any perks, these come with one pre-installed. Their appearance also cannot be changed outside of Shaders.
How to get Armor Mods in Destiny 2
At Shadowkeep's launch, Bungie has explained you can get Armor mods from the following sources:
- From the Gunsmith, either directly through a rotating selection, or from Gunsmith packages
- World Engram rewards
- 'Enhanced' Engrams from certain activities, such as Iron Banner and the Raid
- Time-limited Mods from Seasonal Artefacts that expire at the end of a season
With the exception of those Seasonal Artefact Mods, once you have a Mod, it's always in your inventory and can be consumed as many times as you like, allowing you to experiment with using them across different types of builds.
Destiny 2 Mod types and Mod elements explained
Not all Mods can be installed into any Armor piece. Not only do elements come into play, but different equipment will use different mods based on the improvements you want to make.
It's a little confusing, but kirillburton on reddit has created a useful chart (based on the work by ILikeMeatloaf) showing exactly which Mods work with what equipment.
For example - if you want to improve Pulse Rifles, then you need Arc armor. If you want to specifically want to equip Targeting Mods, then you need to equip an Arc Helmet. If you want Scavenger Mods, then Arc Legs are required.

How to change your Destiny 2 Armor appearance with the Universal Ornament 'transmog' system
In Destiny 2 Year 3, also it's possible to change the appearance of your equipment while keeping the base item's stats and benefits (this includes recent armor such as Solstice of Heroes).
This is the Universal Ornament system - or transmog system, for those familiar with other MMOs - and allows you to change Armor 2.0 equipment (which begin to drop from Shadowkeep and New Light's launch) into any of your collected Eververse armor.
To clarify - you cannot change anything to anything else. The base armour has to be Armor 2.0, and the armour appearances available are 'cosmetic' Eververse sets you have collected, which are now Universal Ornaments.
An additional exception are Exotics, the appearance of which cannot be changed.
To do this, on the perks screen, scroll down where to says 'Appearance' below.
From here, you can make cosmetic changes - including equip Universal Ornaments, Shaders and if supported, Glows.
Destiny 2 Armor 2.0 list: Which previous Destiny 2 Armor will support Armor 2.0?
As well as Shadowkeep's new armor sets, the following existing Destiny 2 Armor will have 2.0 versions once Shadowkeep launches (thanks Bungie.net for the list):
- Crucible: Year 1 (includes Year 1 ornaments)
- Vanguard: Year 1 (includes Year 1 ornaments)
- Black Armory Forges
- Gambit (including Prime sets)
- Menagerie
- Raids, including:
- Leviathan
- Eater of Worlds
- Spire of Stars
- Last Wish
- Scourge of the Past
- Crown of Sorrow
- Destination Armor sets, including:
- European Dead Zone
- Titan
- Nessus
- Io
- Mercury
- Mars (Vendor and Escalation Protocol)
- Tangled Shore
- Dreaming City
- 'Additional world drops that can be found in Legendary engrams', according to Bungie
Remember you need to run these activities anew from Year 3 onwards to get their Armor 2.0 versions. Pulling them from Collections, for example, will give you the older version.
It's worth noting certain Armor is already available as 2.0 versions as soon as Shadowkeep launches. This includes your legendary Solstice of Heroes set, waiting for you at the Gunsmith, and Exotics, which you can pull from your collection with a set roll.
Once you have a Armor 2.0 version of the above, it will then support the new Mod system, as well as Universal Ornaments, allowing you to change the appearance to a cosmetic 'Eververse' set you have collected.
